FAQs

What can I expect at our “intake” session?

The first few minutes of our session covers information around privacy, informed consent, and discussion around what you would like from therapy.  We will then explore other things such as behavioral health symptoms you are experiencing (energy level, sadness and so on) and what has been happening most recently in your life. We may also discuss family history. It is important to me that you feel comfortable with therapy, so our first session (and all subsequent sessions) will flow at a pace that meets your needs.

How long are sessions?

Most sessions are 55 minutes long.

On occasion, depending upon the work being done, we may elect to do a 90-minute session.  However, please take note that insurance companies do not pay for 90-minute sessions, so the additional portion of that appointment is paid out of pocket.

How does it work if we are seeking couples therapy?

Ideally, I will see both of you together for the first session because the “couple” is the “client.”  I will then see each member of the couple individually for at least one session.  This allows for the opportunity to talk about each individual’s history and personal needs and how they relate to the couple relationship.  After that, the couple is generally seen together, although on occasion, additional individual sessions may be scheduled if needed.

What if my partner/spouse does not think we have problems? If I come alone can my relationship still benefit from therapy?

It is not uncommon for one partner to be reluctant to attend therapy for a variety of reasons.  Typically, partners choose not to participate because they think there is nothing wrong or they do not feel as if they are contributing to the issues. They may also think that therapy cannot or will not work. Despite this, you can absolutely still experience growth and relief by working on your side of the situation. “It takes two” is a common phrase, but remember that change can always begin with just one.

Do you take insurance?

  • Insurance networks:  I am in some but not all insurance networks.
  • Out of network insurance companies can also be billed.
  • Out of Pocket: For those who do not have insurance or chose not to use it, out-of-pocket payments are accepted as well as HSA payments.
  • A current list of my in-network insurance companies can be found on my Psychology Today profile

Do you provide teleheath services?

Yes. Many of my clients prefer telehealth for privacy or convenience.
